I've always loved art. I grew up surrounded by art, whether it was visual or musical. However the one form of art I've never understood is abstract art. A painting presented before you with no meaning that could be understood on face value. Maybe it was because I never learned how to derived deeper meaning to a piece of art other that what was in front of me. But since I've started in NAFA, i've learned to appreciate it.

With this piece here titled "Meetings along the edge" by Patricia Oblack, it doesn't look like much. Quite honestly, it looks meaningless. However after learning and understanding the basic elements of art, the painting speaks volumes. The use of cool and earthy colours such as blue and brown depict the meaning of calmness and security. The texture of the colours that seem to merge to one another strengthens the meaning of the colours. The message that the artist could be conveying is meeting someone or finding something that puts your mind at ease with no worries of ever being lost.

I've come to grow a better appreciation for arts and for such artworks. No longer do I look at such pieces with confusion.

My idol

This is a photograph I took of Kim Hee Chul, my Korean idol. I cherish this photo a lot as I even inserted a watermark.

I have been following the boy band Super Junior for a few years, and have been supportive of their activities and promotions.

2 months ago, Kim Hee Chul have just been released from the army in Korea after 2 years of service. To my surprise, his first overseas trip right after he ended his service was Singapore.
Excitedly, his fans including me followed him around Singapore.

As Kim Hee Chul was staying in a hotel in Sentosa, he decided to visit the Universal Studios.
With shades on, he walked from his hotel to the Universal Studios. There was a huge crowd following him, and as we walked towards out destination, many tourists and passerby asked some of us who were we following.
Screams and cheers were everywhere. It was tough following him due to the large crowd and humid weather. My pair of Jeffrey Campbell even got damaged in the process. Everyone were pushing each other, screaming, sweating and taking pictures. Being surrounded by us, I don't know how his nose survived that ordeal.

As Kim Hee Chul walked out after buying his express tickets, I was luckily standing right at the exit which explains why this photo of him was clear and near. I quickly snapped photos. With my photography skills, I think I could be the next Jay Maisel.

The whole journey was tiring, but it was amazing. I got to see who I wanted to see and at the same time enjoy the time I spent with my friends who were also his fans. I hope to see my favorite boy band soon. Meanwhile, I have learnt how to work with a camera correctly.... and not to wear Jeffrey Campbell next time.

Reverberate

Reverberate is the theme that I chose for my 2D individual project. Basically Reverberate is depicting symphony orchestra. Whenever I think of symphony orchestra, I think of the instruments that was played during an orchestral show. Of which made me draw the instruments like the piano, cello and trumpet into my artwork. I used different elements such as dots and lines, scraps of paper for textures, shapes, typography and colours too in my artwork. On the other hand, the soft colours and swirl lines was inspired when I heard a classical song from Beethoven. In conclusion although there is a lot of room for improvement, I'm really glad to be able to complete this artwork. I believe that Art takes a lot of patience and it is all about getting inspired.

Togetherness

Togetherness is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

This picture was taken during a family road trip to a neighbouring country. During every special occasion or gathering, photography has been a common practice in my family. Every moment and time is captured through means of photography so that we could always look back and reminisce.

Pictures remind me of the people who have stayed throughout the period of my life. For that, looking back at past photo makes us appreciate the the people who've been there for us in times of need.

Least Appreciated Kind Of Art

The way society appreciate art has started changing over the years. In the modern days, people are showing more interest and appreciation for art that has relations to performing arts espescially Music. They have almost forgotten about the existence of visual arts.
This beautiful art works was taken from the Singapore Arts Museum gallery. How many of us would go and show our appreciation for these kind of art works? How much response would it get? I am sure that the number of people that appreciates Music is going to be so much more than the number of people that appreciates these art works.

P for Passion & Photography

Back in 2009 while touring the United Kingdom (UK) with my family, the one most important thing I wanted to bring home wasn't gifts and all that souvenirs but memories, memories frozen in time. Clad in my woollen coat with a camera, I was intrigued by the limitless boundaries of photography, almost like a passion- except I knew nothing about it.

One of my favourite photographs was this one I took at Epping Forest, South-East England. Having visited London a twice before, both in summer, I've never gotten to experience the beauty of British winter, which in my case was absolutely stunning.

Given its relatively long timeframe since this photograph was taken, the fact that it still brings back the same winter tranquility is in my case, what photography is about- the ability to bring back sentiments and affectivity of the past.

What is Art?

art

1  [ahrt]  Show IPA
noun
1.
the quality, production, expressionor realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

How do you feel after watching the short clip? What kind of message did it send across, visually? Who did you think of while watching this clip? The emotions being evoked, the message being sent across, the images that is assembling in your mind.. That is art. This clip has an emotional punch at the ending to give the whole idea of the film an extreme
boost and impact.

The essence of all beautiful art - is Gratitude.

Now, give your folks a hug!

A clip I've done back then when I was in Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design in NYP. Creating a clip with no longer than 1.15 seconds, using video cuts. Copyrights issues are to be concern about while doing this clip. Each cut in a particular video which was being extracted must have not be more than one scene, otherwise, it's violating the copyright policy.

Etching Designs.

This was done by me last year. Using crayons, black piant and a sharp tool. Firstly I colour the base with crayons in patchs of random colours all jumbled up. Secondly I painted the entire area with black paint. Then while semi dry I started etching on the black paint creating random abstract designs. It can also be done in just one colour but the various colour used give it a more vibrant and jubilant feel to it. Creating such designs is always fun cause I get to explore my on going curiousity. Art should be about exploring and experimenting.

Behind All That! Performance Production!

Always being involved in the performing arts since young, I would love to share a few stuff that I have learnt especially from my recent performance production "Fame The Musical" that was featured at ITE Ang Mo Kio in March 2013.

It was a production that had a lead up of 6 months (too short for comfort) and the memories and lessons are dearly treasured.

What goes on behind it all! THE TRUTH!

This is my forte and I'm sharing whether you like it or not:)

Converting waste into art

This pig is made up of used things that I found at home. The body is from a colour pencil bottle made up of cardboard. I then painted it pink, and used pink colour paper for its body's patch marks and ears. Afterthat, I used black paper cut outs for its eyes and nose. As for its legs, I rolled pink colour paper onto toothpicks and poked it into its cardboard body. For its tail, i just rolled several pieces of pink colour paper together and twisted it to make it look like a tail.

It was not really challenging making this as I just randomly did this as it goes for my little cousin's birthday gift. I thought it was really cute and creative. Also, it help saves the environment by reusing and recycling old materials to create new crafts.

Momentum

This is an artwork done by me for one of my module, 2D fundamental. The theme for this artwork is Momentum. When I thought of the word 'Momentum',  I would think of a moving train.

A train build up speed through momentum and when at its maximum speed limit, anything in its way will be blown away. I used shapes of paper airplane around the sky, to show the effects of a running train moving by.

Different types of lines are used to show the fast moving speed that the train is moving at. Different types of circles are used to represent people in the train and different colours to represent the different emotions going on in the train.

To conclude, even though I feel that something is missing in this artwork and it feels incomplete. But I am still glad and proud that I manage to finish this artwork.

Photography is an Art

This photo is taken when I was walking around Chinatown street. I edited it to make the photo look like monochrome. I was amazed and also saddened by what I saw. A blind old man who is trying to sell tissues however was ignored by the public. People walked pass him without even realizing that he was there. It is a pity to see him being treated like this.

I took this photo as a interest in photography. I love to capture photos of the surroundings and also a moment that attracts me. I believe that photography is another form of art. Art is not all about drawings and painting. Photography is timeless. The photos that you capture, keep as memories. I believe that people should appreciate photography and learn more about it.

Music keeps me alive.

Introduction

My friends and I would get together weekly to jam as a band and we would call ourselves Halve Time.
We play music genres like alternative and rock, and our influences are bands like Radiohead, The Killers, Hoobastank, U2 and many more.
We each listen to different kinds of music and we have different preferences but we still manage to clique.

This is one of the few songs that we recorded, it's our own rendition of the song Creep by Radiohead.

I believe that music has brought us closer and made us who we are today.
Everyone finds their own different way to express their own emotions and feelings.
For some, they paint and draw, for me? I turn to music, it’s the only thing that will be there for me when no one else can. It is the only thing that speaks to me when no one else will.

My DIY Fisheye Lens - Jolyn Tan || F13AM0159 || AME1B

This was actually taken way back in 2010, when I was really into Photography. I was young and of course didn't have any means to earn cash to buy a Fisheye, I told myself I was quite sure that there should be another way to create one instead of spending a hundred on one small external accessory for my DSLR.

So I looked up Google, in hopes to get a website which will possibly give me a step by step instruction on how to DIY my own Fisheye lens, and yes! I found a perfect website (of course I can't remember which one anymore) that gave me a clear tutorial on how to do one, and it started from there. I actually used a door peephole to get such an effect. I love creativity. ;)

Noise pollution

This was the final piece of my A2 size artwork for the recent module, 2D fundamental. The class had given themes that we had to work on, I chose "pollution". I decided to create my interpretation of noise pollution because we are surrounded by it. The two end of my piece is my interpretation of a mouth and a speaker and in between were dots of the static noise that you see on television.

I have never taken art as my module and honestly, I was nervous. Even though this art piece was not up to standard, I am still proud of it. I spent days coming up ideas for my interpretation and finally I completed it.

My Guardian

My House Maid

My house maid is an important person in my life, she is just like a my elder sister. Everyday, she looks after the house chores, a great help of my family. She always work diligently and never complains. She have been working for 6 years with my family. She is from Indonesia, aged 27 years old, her family and spouse lived in indonesia and sometimes she will become disappointed to remember her family. Whenever she goes back to her country, we would miss her a lot. In fact, she has become a part of our family member. Hence, I decided to draw a portrait of her.
She have a perfect facial features, dark complexion, healthy skin and big eyes. I decided to use the dotting method using a sketching pen and dot my way through this entire portrait, to create a nice gradient effect on the toning and shadowing. It took me a night to complete this portrait, and it was quite challenging to keep dotting all the way as my hands would get tired easily.
However, all my hard work has paid off seeing the final result of my art piece. I gave her as a token of appreciation for her constant guidance and care for our family. She couldn’t be more proud!
